In February 27th, Samsung SDI announced that they supplied the world's largest ESS battery to California, USA.

ESS is energy storage system that uses battery. It can increase the efficiency of energy usage by storing electricity when the use of energy is low, and use stored energy during the peak time.

Samsung SDI cooperated with other global ESS companies and supplied 700,000 of 94 Ah cells, total of 240 MWh, for electric power supply projects in California. It is the largest project in ESS field.

This project is started to supply ESS substituting natural gas power plant. Samsung SDI , AES and other ESS companies supply ESS battery, and electric companies who made contracts with those suppliers will install and manage the facilities. 70% of total project is supplied by Samsung SDI among 3560 MWh, and it is the amount of electricity that can be used for four hours for 40,000 households.

There was an opening ceremony on 24th at AES ESS facility with personnels from Samsung SDI and AES energy storage. At AES ESS, 150 MWh of batteries are installed at 24 containers and is more than a half of total capacity of batteries that Samsung SDI supplied.

Samsung SDI explained that the reason they are chosen for this project is because Samsung SDI's battery technology is recognized as a safe one. In addition, the USA is known for strict regulation on the safety test.

Also, it normally takes one year from obtaining order to supplying for ESS project, but Samsung SDI reduced this time cost by cooperating with ESS companies at earlier stage.

Namseong Cho, CEO of Samsung SDI, stated that supplying to the world's largest ESS battery is the result of recognizing Samsung SDI's technology and its competency. Also, he adds that the battery will help to stabilize supplying the electricity to California area.

According to B3, market research agency, Samsung SDI is recorded as the top of future global ESS market with market share of 18% in 2015.

Nevigant Research forecasts that the global lithium ion battery of ESS market will grow at the annual rate of 60% until 2020. Especially, American market is expected to lead global ESS market with 4.2 GWh capacity with deterioration of existing facilities and expanding the supply of new and renewable energies.
